I often wake to this wonderful cooing sound. Since I grew up in the area I knew it was a crane. I was lucky to grab a photo of the huge birds when we were on our way to the lake.
You can see our house in the background and that is usually how close they are.
I'm sure these are a Sandhill Crane. They are beautiful birds..or so I think.

This is what Wikipedia says about their call.....
"This crane frequently gives a loud trumpeting call that suggests a French-style "r" rolled in the throat, and they can be heard from a long distance"
They have a wingspan up to 7 feet and just look awesome when they take off.
